Vacuum Electron Devices Group (VEDG)

R&D Focus Areas of the Group

  • Conventional Vacuum Electron Devices like Klystron, Magnetron, TWT etc.

Vision

  • CSIR-CEERI has been working in the area of vacuum electron devices (VED) since its inception and is the only institute in the country which has developed and delivered several types of such devices to cater the strategic needs of the nation including C-band space TWT, Magnetrons, Back-ward wave oscillators, L/S-band klystron etc. VED devices are crucial for their important role in various fields of strategic importance like atomic energy, satellite communication, and defence as well as in societal sectors like agriculture, biomedical and industrial applications. In order to keep the pace of research and development with the rest of the world particularly in the area of vacuum electron devices, this group aims to nurture its capabilities in developing state-of-the-art technologies required for these devices by enhancing the performance parameters of these devices like efficiency, power, bandwidth, life and reliability so that to make our country self-reliant in this area of strategic needs.

Mission

  • Our emphasis is to carry out optimum and innovative design solutions through simulation and development of new generation VED devices so that CSIR-CEERI can continue to maintain its leadership role by transferring new know-hows and technology demonstrations.
  • Establishment of facilities and R&D for futuristic devices/ components/systems for societal, strategic and industrial applications and exploring into the research domain of vacuum microelectronics
  • Research and design studies towards development of modern variants of VED devices such as Multi beam/sheet beam devices, CW/Pulsed magnetrons, MPM (microwave power modules) etc. to meet the demand for higher power in the higher frequency regime
  • To align the ongoing R&D activities with some of the important national missions like clean energy, pure drinking water, Green hydrogen mission, sustainable health, modern agriculture techniques etc. where a significant contribution can be ensured by utilizing the VED devices
  • Active collaborations with industry/ academic institutions for doing interdisciplinary scientific projects and by sharing of the technical resources, infrastructure among organizations so as to develop newer technologies.

Major Group Activities

  • Design and development of 5/6 MW S-band Klystron and 2.6 /3 MW S-band tuneable pulse magnetron
  • Development of RF Couplers for LEHIPA project and RF Windows for DAE requirements
  • Design and Development of C-band 60W space TWT and Short length Ku-Band 140 W space TWT
  • Indigenous Design, Development & Qualification of Ku Band (140-210 Watts) and Ka-Band (100-150 watts) TWTs
