The Thacker Memorial Lawn Tennis Tournament (TMLTT) was started in the fond memory of Prof. M.S. Thacker, a great scientist and a visionary leader who succeeded Dr. Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar as the second Director General of Council of Scientific & Industrial Research (1955-1962). Born in 1904 and after a brilliant academic record in Allahabad and England, Prof Thacker served with the Calcutta Electrical Supply Corporation for 16 years (1931-47) before joining the Indian Institute of Science as Proffessor of the Deptt. of Electrical Technology. In 1949, he became the Director of the same Institution and served it till 1955 when he was appointed Head of the CSIR. As DG-CSIR, he encouraged the directors of CSIR laboratories to think big and act boldly in the context of a rapidly developing economy. Prof. M.S. Thacker was an Electrical Engineer by training and believed in applying Science & Technology in a practical way to the benefit of lesser developed areas of science. He earned a reputation for toughness, for a determination to get things done and for a ready grasp of scientific and industrial matters in all fields. Prof. Thacker was a recipient of the Padma Bhushan award in 1955 and was a member of Planning Commission from 1962-1967. He was an internationally known authority in the field of Power Engineering. Prof. Thacker was a recipient of many professional honours and distinctions. Amongst others, he was a fellow of the American Institute of Electrical Engineers, Fellow of the National Institute of Sciences of India, Member of the Institution of Electrical Engineers, Member of the Institution of Engineers, etc.
The Thacker Memorial Lawn Tennis Tournament is played bi-annually in two phases; the first phase is for competition among CSIR laboratory teams and for selection of players for two CSIR teams. In the second phase these two selected CSIR team play with invited local teams from Science & Technology related departments.
The tournament is conducted on a league-cum-knockout basis which includes both phases of the tournament. Maximum four players (including the manager) are allowed to participate from CSIR Staff Club and teams from local S & T related departments. The CSIR-Sports Promotion Board (CSIR-SPB) has instituted a ‘BEST CSIR Lawn Tennis Player Award’ which carries a cash prize of Rs. 5000/- and a citation which will be presented on the CSIR Foundation Day at their respective laboratory.
