Activities on Terahertz technology and applications in India
Indian institutes of national and international importance such as ISRO, DRDO, TIFR, BARC, and IITs are involved in various Terahertz activities in India. Some of the activities are, Gigahertz and Terahertz antenna on photonic crystal substrate, Affordable Submillimeter/THz Components Using 3D Printed Dielectric Integrated Guides, Generation and detection of THz, THz spectroscopy of materials, THz Plasmonics, Wireless Terahertz Communication System for the identified use cases for Defence applications, High Impact Terahertz Source Based Imaging, Micro-Electromechanical System (MEMS) based TeraHertz Imaging Sensor, Terahertz (THz) Imaging, Terahertz metamaterials: Broadband devices, toroidal excitations, meta-waveguides, etc.
Accordingly, the Council of Scientific & Industrial Research (CSIR), India, has launched a mission-mode project, Developing Expertise and Leveraging Terahertz Technology Advancements in CSIR (DELTA), on Terahertz Technology involving CSIR labs from all over the country. The mission comprises 15 parallel activities broadly divided into 4 verticals, among which the major vertical comprising 7 activities are ongoing at CSIR-CEERI itself. Some of the major activities are the technology development for electronic filters chirp signal generation, and processing for THz radar transmitter, Design and Development of Uncooled Compact Pyroelectric-based THz Detector, design and development of high-power THz transmission line waveguide products, Design and development of GaN HEMT for THz radar and communication systems, Development of Micro-Electro- Mechanical Switches for Terahertz Technologies, Development of MEMS based Terahertz Detector for Imaging Applications, Design and development of THz vacuum electronic amplifier, and Design and development of antenna for THz Radar.
